Electronystagmography (ENG) and Videonystagmography (VNG)

Electronystagmography (ENG) and videonystagmography (VNG) are two distinct measurement alternatives commonly used to assess vestibular function. Both assessment measures provide a permanent record of eye movements, which is crucial in the assessment of the vestibular system. While there has been some debate regarding the benefits of one measurement system over another, both systems have advantages and disadvantages, and both are used commonly in clinical settings to assess the oculomotor and vestibular systems. Regardless of measurement type (ENG vs. VNG), the test battery typically consists of the following components: oculomotor evaluation, positioning testing, positional testing, and caloric irrigation. Each subcomponent of the ENG/VNG assesses a different portion of the oculomotor or vestibular system, in order to help diagnose dysfunction.
