Yawn–Sigh Technique
The yawn–sigh is a technique used in behavioral voice therapy to address symptoms of laryngeal hyperfunction. Symptoms manifest as a tense voice that is produced with hard onset, poor breath support, elevation of the larynx, and constriction of the vocal tract. The technique consists of a combination of a yawn and a sigh at the beginning of phonation to provide increased breath supply and induce relaxation of the larynx and vocal tract. The yawn is a reflex triggered by the need for oxygen that involves increased and prolonged air intake as well as a maximum widening of the upper airways.
