Voice therapy is an approach to treating voice disorders that involve behavioral changes coupled with direct vocal exercises. Often used as the first line of treatment for a variety of voice disorders, voice therapy is provided by a licensed and certified Speech–Language pathologist. Before voice therapy is begun by the Speech–Language pathologist, the larynx must be visualized by a physician to diagnose laryngeal pathology and/or identify the reason for the voice problem. Although a voice disorder is classified as low incidence, knowledge and competencies for voice therapy have been subdivided into various subspecialties, including care and management of the professional voice, head and neck cancer voice rehabilitation, pediatric voice care, and voice therapy for neurogenic voice disorders.
