Technology and Communication Disorders
Technology is widely used today in the field of assessment, analysis, treatment, service delivery, and assistance (i.e., assistive technology) of those with communication disorders. Examples of technology used in communication disorders include (1) a grammar training software program for a child with developmental language impairment; (2) a hearing aid for a person with hearing impairment; (3) a communication board for someone with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis who has lost his or her speech; and (4) a computer-based test of language comprehension. However, the use of technology in communication disorders also has challenges. Both the uses and challenges of technology in communication disorders are discussed in this entry.
