Key Word Signing Systems

Establishing meaningful communication with those who have never developed speech or who have lost the ability to speak is a challenge that often requires choosing one of a number of alternative approaches or a combined communication approach. Key word signing is one such approach that involves manually signing the key words of a sentence together with the given spoken language. For example, if the sentence Can you open the milk please? was spoken, the words open and milk would be signed. One of the most widely used key word signing systems is Makaton.
