Hearing Tests
Hearing tests are the basis of the discipline of audiology. Audiology is devoted to the diagnosis and prevention of hearing loss as well as the treatment of hearing problems. Hearing testing has been one of the cornerstones of the profession. A simple description of a hearing test is that sound is presented to an individual, and the person is instructed to respond when the person hears the sound. An axiom that distinguishes hearing testing from other physiologic measures of the ear is this statement: We hear with our brains. In other words, there are multiple methods for assessing the health or function of the ear that don’t require an individual’s response.
