What is culture and why does the culture of a governing board of a college, university, or system matter? The governing board is the corporate entity with fiduciary responsibility for the institution it holds in trust. How board members learn and understand their roles and responsibilities, work together, relate to the chief executive and others at their institution, and communicate with outsiders on behalf of the institution all reflect the written and unwritten rules or norms that are the culture of the board.
