Ethics and Leadership

In higher education settings, ethics and leadership refers to the ethical significance of a campus leader’s decisions and actions. A leader’s behavior may be examined in light of ethical theory. It may also be understood in view of the experiences and cultures shared by members of college and university communities.

Traditionally, effective leadership required maintaining a stable organization and accomplishing incremental change. Additionally, it included transforming the organization’s culture to achieve strategic change. In the 21st century, effective leadership also entails the ability to redesign an organization to ensure its success in an environment shaped by global phenomena such as neoliberalism and climate change.
