According to the American Immigration Council, it is estimated that more than 11 million people living in the United States were undocumented immigrants as of 2018. Of these, approximately 1.8 million were undocumented young people who were brought to the United States as children. An individual who is an undocumented immigrant is a foreign national who either entered the United States without inspection or with fraudulent papers or entered legally with a visa but remained in the United States without authorization.

Each year, high schools in the United States graduate approximately 65,000 undocumented students. Despite trends suggesting that the occupations most in demand in the future will require an associate degree or above, only 5–10% of undocumented students will access higher education.
