Higher education in Africa finds expression through different institutional types including universities, technical and vocational colleges, and private higher education institutions. Delivery modes are in the form of contact or distance learning, which includes online education. These institutions play different roles, with universities producing research and preparing graduates for professions, whereas other institutions teach students practical skills for a particular vocation whilst also equipping them with other forms of knowledge and skills needed to participate in work and life.
