The term ‘basic education’ is generally used to refer to education activities that take place at the level of primary or lower secondary education and is often used in the context of adult education. The way in which adult basic education is organised varies amongst countries, and as such, there is not a single definition of what it entails. It often includes courses to help adults who have already left school in achieving higher levels of (digital) literacy and numeracy, although it can also contain a range of other courses, for example, training initiatives to help adults develop their interpersonal skills.
