Teaching Strategies

A teaching strategy is the intentional orchestration of teaching methods to support student learning of subject matter that constitutes the core ideas of the course. There are three important aspects to any strategy: It is (1) intentional (i.e., actively chosen by a faculty member and is planned according to the broader principles that a professor holds about teaching), (2) orchestrated (i.e., the professor does more than select teaching methods and assessment instruments but considers the sequence, the emphasis, and how methods and assessments interact with specific course ideas and for specific students in the course), and (3) focused on student learning of core ideas (i.e., the focus of any teaching strategy is on teaching of subject matter in a way that students learn).
