Race in U.S. Higher Education Leadership

Most of the research on individuals from nondominant minority racial and ethnic groups in higher education leadership roles focuses on the presidency, but there is growing discussion of other leadership roles, such as trustee, provost, and vice president. The research on leadership in higher education has its roots in extensive study and numerous theories on leadership in a variety of contexts. This search for a formula for effective leadership has evolved from a focus on characteristics of the individual to theories that incorporate the organizational setting in which leadership occurs. Along the way studies have developed documenting the unique qualities of colleges and universities as organizations and the specifics of leadership within these organizations.
