Projects 211 and 985

Projects 211 and 985 are two projects launched by the central government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1995 and 1999, respectively. Project 211 aimed at strengthening about 100 higher education institutions and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century. The project included 112 universities as a result of considering national agenda, institution types, countrywide distribution of educational resources, and the needs of regional social and economic development.

Project 985 was a presidential call for building world-class universities to increase their overall capacity, research and teaching, international prestige, and global competitiveness. It focused on 9 elite universities initially and expanded to include 39 universities at the late stages. Project 985 universities were picked from Project 211 universities. Combined, Projects ...
