Leadership Theory Over Time

Leadership can be defined as one or more individuals possessing or demonstrating an ability to elicit certain desired behaviors from a group of followers. Leadership theories are attempts by theorists to frame the reasons why and the manner in which leaders are able to influence others to follow. Leadership theory broadly addresses the following questions:

  • What traits or qualities does an individual possess that allow them to be a successful leader?
  • What actions does an individual engage in that identify them as a leader?
  • What outcomes does a leader seek to work toward and what prescribed path will facilitate the outcome?
