Restaurant Management

Restaurant management is the profession of managing a restaurant. The profession consists of administration responsibilities, front-of-the-house management, and back-of the-house management. Although a form of restaurant management has existed since the creation of the first restaurants, the practices and responsibilities of restaurant management have become standardized over the past two and a half centuries. To learn the necessary skills to manage a restaurant, college and universities in the United States offer training programs at the associate, bachelor, and graduate level. Specific restaurant chains mandate that their employees attend chain-specific programs, whereas other restaurant managers have no formal training and have learned the skills while working in other restaurant positions such as waiters and hostesses.
