Technologies in mathematics education refer to a wide variety of technical tools, including both hardware and software, utilized to support mathematical computation, representation, exploration, sense making and reasoning, and communication in a classroom environment. In K–12 and postsecondary education, basic four-function calculators coexist with scientific calculators, graphing calculators, next-generation handhelds, tablet apps, powerful integrated mathematical learning environments, and Web-based computational knowledge engines. In principle, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) views technologies as essential tools in mathematics education because they enhance the accessibility of mathematical ideas and improve students’ mathematical understanding. This entry describes the technologies used in mathematics education and discusses the emergent perspectives and recent trends in the use of these technologies.
