Games for adult learners refers to the use of games, or game principles, to support, enhance, or create learning opportunities for adults. There is much debate in game studies about the exact definition of the word game, as well as what constitutes an adult learner in education studies. For the purposes of simplicity and clarity, the definitions provided here aim to encompass the most common understandings of the terms used in the associated literatures. A game takes place where one or more players engage in a nontrivial challenge, entered into with a spirit of playfulness, with explicit goals, rules, progression, and rewards, and by so doing create a circle of play with accepted norms and behaviors different from those of the real world.
