Automated Scoring of Essays

Automated scoring of essays uses natural language processing and computer-based technology to evaluate and score written prose in order to overcome time, cost, objectivity, reliability, and generalizability issues in writing assessments. This entry first describes how automated essay scoring (AES) systems work and how they are used. Next, some of the automated essay systems now in use, research on the systems’ reliability and validity, and classroom-based AES systems used to give feedback on writing are discussed. The entry concludes with future directions in research and development of AES systems.
