A person holding an academic or a teaching position at a college or university can aspire to pursue a tenure-track career path. The process takes a certain length of time, and there are specific stages that a person needs to go through. The first stage is the position of an assistant professor, and the second stage is the position of an associate professor; these stages are usually considered as the probation or transition stages that lead a person to a tenured professorship position.
