Olympic Games

The Olympic Games is the world’s greatest and most popular sporting event. Despite having to deal with international state affairs, as with the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games during the Third Reich, repeated boycotts between 1976 and 1984, and several other problems such as doping and corruption scandals, the festival has continually grown during the past century. While in 1896 in Athens, a total of 311 athletes from 13 countries participated in the first modern Olympics, there were more than 10,000 participants from around the world in London in 2012. Hence, the Olympic Games attract strong worldwide media attention, not only to the sportsmen and medal tables but also to the host cities and nations.
