According to the American Nurses Association, nurses contribute to overall health and wellness goals for society that are similar to the goals of other health care givers. Speaking broadly, the nursing profession seeks to preserve human life as well as promote overall wellness. Nurses pursue these goals along three general avenues. First, nurses attempt to prevent avoidable illness and injury. Second, through their care for the sick and injured, nurses work toward both the recovery of the sick and the healing of the injured, as well as toward the comfort of all in their care. Finally, nurses serve as health champions for their individual patients, along with families, communities, and the broader society.
