Exhibitionism is commonly defined as exposing one’s genitals to unsuspecting strangers in public places for purposes of sexual gratification. It is one of eight paraphilias included in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. Paraphilias are defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition as persistent, intense, and atypical sexual interests, and these are thought to be highly comorbid. In other words, the presence of one paraphilia, such as exhibitionism, increases the likelihood that other atypical sexual interests or paraphilias will also be present.
