Comprehensive correctional plans are evidence-based strategies that include a diversity of perspectives in order to collaboratively integrate mental health programming into the overall correctional programming. It accentuates the maxim that working together works. The United States has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, with 5% of the world’s population, but nearly 25% of the world’s prisoners. Concomitant with the increase in the incarceration population, there has been exponential growth in the number of mentally ill individuals in U.S. jails and prisons. Today, at least 15–20% of U.S. prison inmates have a serious mental illness, and when including broad-based mental illnesses, the percentages increase significantly.
