Substance use disorders refer to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances including alcohol and drugs. Treatment interventions address the biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to substance use disorders. The association between substance use and crime is well established in the empirical literature. Substance users can become involved in the criminal justice system through (a) possession of an illicit substance, (b) sale or illegal distribution of a substance, or (c) engaging in other illegal activity, such as theft, to support continued drug use.
