Sequential Intercept Model

The Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) is a conceptual framework that addresses the overrepresentation of individuals with serious mental illness in the criminal justice system. Due to a lack of access to community mental health services, individuals with serious mental illness are significantly more likely to be arrested and detained for long periods of time compared with those without serious mental illness. The goals of the SIM are to prevent individuals with serious mental illness from being arrested and jailed, provide them with prompt and easy access to treatment services, limit the duration that they spend in the criminal justice system, provide linkages to community treatment services, and decrease recidivism.
