Early intervention refers to comprehensive developmental and educational services for young, vulnerable children from birth to school entry and their families. It consists of anticipating, identifying, and responding to child and family concerns in order to maximize children’s development and learning.
To provide high-quality early intervention services and supports, the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) of the Council for Exceptional Children periodically identifies, validates, and disseminates recommended practice guidelines for the field. DEC is an international membership organization whose members include teachers, therapists, family members, and others who care for, or work on behalf of, young children with special needs and their families. The organization promotes policies and advances evidence-based practices that support families and enhance the optimal development of young children.
