Assessment is an integral part of instruction in early childhood special education (ECSE). The assessment data gathered are required to communicate children’s progress, and to determine what children know and can do, individually and/or collectively, at any point in time, before, during, or after instruction. The Ounce Scale is an assessment tool used in some ECSE programs for ongoing, observational, functional assessment of children from birth through 42 months. The Ounce Scale uses Observation Records completed by both parents and early childhood professionals to document progress over time.
