The term internship refers to a learning experience provided for selected and prepared individuals who desire to become professional practitioners. In teacher training in the United States, internship, which is also often called student teaching, refers to an extended field placement during initial teacher training in which prospective teachers (also called student teachers), assume teaching responsibilities in the classrooms of cooperating teachers. Internship in the field of education is usually preceded by observatory participation and student teaching or equivalent clinical experiences in a school environment. It is planned and coordinated by the teacher education institution in cooperation with one or more school systems.
