Multiple regression analysis intends to provide the ability to make two different assessments: (a) the overall effectiveness of using a set of predictors to estimate the value of a dependent variable (measured by the multiple R) and (b) provide an estimate of the relative contribution of each independent variable in making the prediction (using both standardized and unstandardized coefficients). The question of how to manage other elements involved in prediction is included as a means of using covariates in the analysis. Covariates represent one method of accounting for a source of variability in the analysis that is not something of primary interest.
