Founded in 2005, and purchased by Google in 2006, YouTube is the world’s largest online video sharing service. The platform hosts video content produced by amateur and professional filmmakers, ranging from video blogs (or vlogs) to music videos. Most videos on YouTube are free to watch, and the service relies on advertising as its primary source of revenue. In addition to hosting videos, YouTube operates as a popular social media platform. Users can create a YouTube account to identify themselves as a video’s author and to comment on or rate videos uploaded by others. In 2015, a standalone platform called ‘YouTube Kids’—aimed at children up to 12 years of age—was released.
