Schooling, Gender, and Race

Schools may be one of the few institutions that exist in almost every nation around the world. In many countries, schooling is also conceptualized not only as a medium through which children are educated but also as an institution that teaches children values. In Western democracies, in particular, schools are often imbued with the responsibility of fostering inclusive practices that overcome inequalities. Schools thus are places where children learn the ropes of democracy. According to some scholars, in recent years, systems of schooling have been curtailed in their democratic missions due to various issues such as inbuilt structural inequalities, low teacher quality, the use of outdated curricula that lack cultural relevance to many children, and de facto segregation practices that have continued despite being outlawed. ...
