Participation Rights, UNCRC

Within childhood studies, participation tends to be associated with notions of having a say, involvement in decision making or influence within personal lives, practise, research, and policy. Participation can also refer to materially contributing to family, communities, and wider society or even taking part in education. This entry focusses on children’s rights to participation as enshrined in the 1989 ‘United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which are more strongly associated with participation as voice and decision making than with material participation. Interpretation of the main participation provisions within the UNCRC, and guidance on implementation, are detailed in ‘General Comment No. 12’. Models for understanding variations in participation are then outlined together with strategies for improving realisation of participation rights.
