Lindgren, Astrid

Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002) is the most beloved children’s book author in Sweden and one of Sweden’s most prominent cultural exports. She was an extremely prolific writer who published 34 books, 41 picture books, and scripts for TV, theater, radio, and film as well as a considerable number of songs (which are sung in Sweden and also in neighboring countries). Her worldwide fame follows, nevertheless, the adventures of her Pippi Longstocking (Pippi Långstrump), a red-haired, freckled, and unconventional 9-year-old girl who makes fun of adults and lives by herself with a horse and a monkey.
