Cannabis Use Disorder

Cannabis use disorder is a substance use disorder in which the relevant drug is cannabis (marijuana). The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manualof Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), published in 2013, defines substance use disorder as having at least 2 of 11 symptoms (described later in this entry), with more symptoms suggesting more severity. Those who experience two to three symptoms receive the mild severity rating; four to five symptoms receive a diagnosis of moderate severity; and six or more symptoms qualify for the severe rating. These symptoms must create meaningful distress and must occur within the same year. Each symptom reflects the idea that a person cannot function without the drug and the person makes maladaptive sacrifices to use it.
