Efficacy research occurs when experimental methods are used to evaluate the beneficial effects of clinical treatments. The primary contribution of experimental methods is to maximize the chances that causal claims about the beneficial effects of clinical treatments are valid. Clinical treatments are generally considered to have demonstrated efficacy when the beneficial effects of the treatments have been replicated a number of times in efficacy research. Although the primary focus in efficacy research is to evaluate the beneficial effects of clinical treatments, efficacy research can also be used to evaluate the detrimental effects of clinical treatments.
