Tobacco use and tobacco-related problems change over the lifespan. A lifespan perspective allows for the examination of how tobacco affects people at different stages of life and how different stages of life affect tobacco use behaviors. Understanding tobacco use disorder from a lifespan perspective allows for the development and application of prevention efforts and treatment specific to different stages of life. There is evidence that such an approach is more effective than approaches that do not take developmental issues into consideration.
