Susto is one of the most widely studied illnesses among Hispanic populations, and it requires the complex understanding of the relation between the mind and the body in Latin American culture. Susto is a culture-specific disorder consisting of symptoms of physical weakness and bodily pain that follow a sudden frightening experience. In its mildest form, those with susto generally experience head pain and nausea. Intermediately, difficulty sleeping and loss of appetite occur.
