Suicide constitutes a major public health crisis in the United States as well as around the world. In 2014, 42,769 Americans died by suicide, the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Suicide is a significant cause of mortality across the lifespan, with the exception of very young children. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth and young adults aged 10 to 34 years and the fourth leading cause of death among those 35 to 54 years of age. The highest rates of suicide occur in middle-aged and older men, and four out of five suicides are by males.
