Suicide: Military Service Members and Veterans

According to the Self-Directed Violence Classification System, suicide is defined as a behavior that is self-directed and deliberately results in death. Moreover, to meet the criteria, there must be evidence (implicit or explicit) of suicidal intent. Although suicide occurs across all populations and is a major public health concern in the United States, the rate of suicide among service members and veterans has surpassed that of civilians. The term service member refers to “member[s] of the uniformed services” (section 101(a)(5) of Title 10, United Sates Code). A veteran is defined as a “person who served in the active Military, Naval, or Air Service, and who was discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable” (Statute 38 U.S.C. § 101(2); 38 C.F.R. § 3.1(d)). ...
