Suicide: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Individuals

Suicide behaviors are more common among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals than among heterosexual counterparts. In this entry, suicide behavior is defined as completed suicide, suicide attempts, and suicidal ideation. LGBT is defined as people who identify with minority sexual orientation or gender labels. This definition leaves out many individuals, such as those who have not yet identified as LGBT (in the questioning stage), use different labels (e.g., gender queer, fluid sexuality), or do not reveal their sexuality or gender identity in surveys or interviews about suicide and who may be at even higher risk.
