Addictions nursing has been recognized as a specialty for more than 30 years. This nursing specialty is grounded in the profession of nursing. Addictions nursing involves focusing on nursing practice in an identified specific area within the entire field of professional nursing. Emerging from recognition as a nursing specialty were publications on nursing practice from the American Nurses Association, the National Nurses Society on Addiction, and the Drug and Alcohol Nurses Association in 1987; standards of addictions nursing from the National Nurses Society on Addictions and the American Nurses Association in 1989; and the Scope and Standards of Addictions Nursing Practice from the American Nurses Association and the International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA) initially published in 2004 and revised in 2013.
