Specific Phobia: Treatment

Although specific phobias are among the most common of anxiety disorders, they are also the most treatable. The treatment of choice is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), emphasizing exposure-based strategies. However, individuals with specific phobias may not be aware of the treatment options or may be reluctant to seek treatment for their phobia due to feelings of embarrassment or concerns of stigma. In addition, there may be barriers to accessing treatment due to a lack of experienced treatment providers (often encountered in rural areas) or cost (treatment may be expensive). Prior to engaging in treatment for specific phobia, a thorough assessment is warranted.
