The purpose of teaching proper sleep hygiene (SH) to those with and without sleep issues is to provide information regarding the influence of various environmental and lifestyle factors that may interfere with or enhance optimal sleep. Proper SH guidelines are widely reported in the media, and most patients experiencing trouble sleeping have tried on their own to correct their most egregious SH infractions, such as drinking caffeinated coffee with dinner, before seeking professional help. For most patients experiencing chronic, unremitting insomnia, proper SH is typically not a cure for their sleep disorder, but it helps people become less vulnerable to developing insomnia or lessens the severity of the disorder.
