Sexual Dysfunction: Cultural Factors

Culture refers to the shared beliefs, values, and behaviors that are transferred from one generation to the next that establish a certain way of living shared and practiced by people in a specific society. Similarity predicts the group identity, but cultures differ in terms of tolerance to diversity. The extent to which a culture embraces religion also varies from culture to culture. Different cultures are diverse about which behaviors are tolerated, accepted, or rejected; for this reason, definition of problematic behaviors and their management are not culture free. Specifically, sexual behaviors and problems are especially sensitive to social and cultural influences.
