Sex Reassignment Surgery

Sex reassignment surgery refers in its general sense to any surgical procedure that masculinizes or feminizes the bodies of persons with severe gender dysphoria (GD) who are undergoing sex reassignment to live as persons of the other sex or gender. These individuals are usually referred to as transsexuals—either male to female (MtF) or female to male (FtM). In its more specific sense, sex reassignment surgery refers to the surgical procedures that are most often performed or regarded as most essential in the sex reassignment process. For MtF transsexuals, this ordinarily means genital transformation surgery—amputation of the penis (penectomy), amputation of the testicles (orchiectomy), and creation of a vaginal cavity (vaginoplasty).
