Sex Offenders

Sex offender is a term generally used to describe individuals who have been convicted of engaging in sexual acts against a nonconsenting individual. The legal definition of sex crime varies by state but includes a wide range of behaviors from noncontact offenses such as viewing child pornography to contact offenses such as fondling and rape. Some behaviors that might not be culturally recognized as sexual assaults, such as public urination, can also be classified as sexual crimes in some states. Sex offenders account for approximately 3% to 4% of adults in the United States who are under the supervision of corrections (e.g., incarcerated, on parole, or on probation).
