Seizures, Mental Health Conditions Related to

Seizure disorders, also referred to as epilepsy, are associated with multiple mental health (psychological and behavioral) conditions that significantly decrease quality of life and are correlated with worse response to treatment. Epilepsy is a heterogeneous brain disorder, with many different causes and diverse clinical manifestations. Seizure and epilepsy are common neurological disorders, with 4 to 10 per 1,000 people in the worldwide general population estimated to have active epilepsy at any given time, per the World Health Organization. Approximately 10% of the world’s general population experience at least one seizure during their lifetime. Given the large number of persons experiencing seizures, knowledge of the associated psychopathology is important to the field of abnormal and clinical psychology.
