Academic achievement, mental health, and school climate are major concerns associated with the education of children and youth. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, less than 40% of children in Grades 4, 8, and 12 scored at or above proficient in reading during either the 2011 or 2013 assessments. In mathematics, 40% and 42% of fourth graders scored at or above proficient in 2011 and 2013, respectively, with less than 40% achieving that level of performance in either eighth or twelfth grade.
