Respeto is a Latino/a cultural value common among many Latino/as that entails a dynamic of respect within numerous interpersonal domains. Respeto is instilled in children in early childhood as they start to distinguish right from wrong and may look different depending on the context. Within familial relationships, respeto is regarded as greater obedience to family authority figures, which includes parents, adults in the extended family (e.g., tías/aunts, tíos/uncles, madrinas–padrinos/godparents), and elders in the family (e.g., abuelasabuelos/grandparents). The obedience of children and younger family members serves to maintain the order of the family unit, particularly for those who may be regarded as matriarchs and/or patriarchs of the extended family unit.
